A hotel ends somewhere. That line is what this guide is about.
Eighteen hotels, read from the edge of their own ground rather than from the lobby. We describe the boundary itself, whatever it happens to be, and then the forest, water, market or desert that starts on the other side of it.
The guide opens with Ashford Castle behind an estate wall, carries on to The Datai Langkawi at the rainforest edge and then Cavas Wine Lodge at the last row of vines. Longitude 131° on a dune outside the park follows, then Hotel Endsleigh where the gardens reach the Tamar and La Mamounia behind one high garden wall. The capsule hotels are tighter: Dream Lodge one wall from the street, then Sleep Owl a door off the market, Chic Capsule Otel against an Istanbul street market and 9h nine hours Namba Station one wall from Namba station. In Canada the boundary is water or trees: Montreal Casino & Hotel on the bank of the island, Fallsview Casino Resort at the lip of the gorge, River Rock Casino Resort where the quay meets the Fraser and Casino Rama Resort at the treeline above the lake. Winter closes the guide with Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel behind a wall of snow, Arctic SnowHotel where the clearing meets forest, Kirkenes Snowhotel a few paces from the fjord and Iglu-Dorf at the edge of the snowfield.
Interiors are described everywhere. The ground a hotel sits on is described far less often, and it decides more: what you hear at night, what the windows were turned toward, where the doors had to go. That is why every entry here starts at the edge. The method is set out on Where It Ends.
